I tried bleeding the brakes because they were soft and required pumping to build up pressure.
I THOUGHT the braking system (recently assembled by my restoration man) was filled with Dot 5 fluid. I noticed too late that the system had contained Dot 3 fluid. My helper had already poured a couple of ounces of Dot 5 into the master cylinder and given the brake another 3 pumps after that.
Now it became obvious that the fluid coming out was Dot 3. I immediately stopped the process, tightened the bleed screw, and drank heavily.
This morning I tried to suck the Dot 5 purple layer out of the master cylinder with a turkey baster, but I believe it may have gone into the line (to the left rear wheel cylinder) already. I cannot be sure. I am pretty sure the Dot 5 did not reach any brake cylinder.
The small amount I got out of the master cylinder was dark, not light in color, however, the last few drops seemed pretty clear like Dot 3.
I prefer the Dot 3, even though I know Dot 5 is "better". I have read that the Dot 5 is harder to keep sealed into the system, and may leak. My brake cylinders are aluminum in a steel case (not relined).
What must I now do to remove the dot 5 before it may reach the cylinders? Do I need to dissemble the system to clean it out? Or is there an easier way?
I need help with the ache in the pit of my stomach.
I believe all needing done is to flush the entire system with Dot 3. Am I correct?
