Looking for opinions here.My owners manual says to change oil every 3 months or 3000 miles. Some say that it's possible to extend that with synthetic oil.If so 1)how long can it be extended? 2)Do we have to use an oil filter that's specific for synthetic oil or will a standard oil filter do?

I personally change my oil about every 5000 miles with standard oil because it gets a lot of miles on it & gets warmed up good when we start it as a rule. if you do a lot of short trips I wouldn't advise it. Synthetic can usually be run longer but I'd check the bottle it comes in to see how much farther. some say up to ten thousand but might be stretching it a bit. normal oil filter will do just fine.

For years at work we used the 15W40 diesel oil in everything, and did oil changes at 4,000 miles. Then we stretched the interval to 5,000 miles on the cars, pickups and SUV's. We had a 1997 Ford pickup with the 5.4 V8 go almost 300,000 miles when it was pulled from service and never opened up the engine. Once variable cam timeing came out we had to switch to the exact oil the vehicle called for but kept the 5,000 mile intervals. No special oil filters, just regular WIX brand.
A lot of people ( quickie Lubes and new car dealers ) are still recommending 3000 mile intervals, but the reason for that is money.
Todays oils are very good quality and way better than what was made even 5 years ago. I have no problem with going more than the 3000 on them. 4000 on regular oil, synthetic is good ( I think ) for at least 5000. Another option is synthetic blend more expensive than regular dino oil, less expansive than full synthetic and I would have no problem running it 4 to 5000 mile intervals. My personal choice is Mobil 1 synthetic for my Flex. However it has an oil life monitor and mileage intervals change according to driving habits and weather. I have changed the oil as soon as 5000, and as long as 8000 miles. Since my son is an AMSOIL Dealer I use that in the wife's Edge , regular oil filter and 5000 mile intervals as she does mostly in town driving. Another plus to synthetic is a possible fuel mileage increase which will help offset the higher price of the synthetic or synthetic blend. Oh and I ignore the time interval, if it takes me 9 months to get 5000 miles it still gets changed at 5000. that alone will save the price of 2 oil changes.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

My 95 Crown Vic has about 240,000 miles on it. It's only seen Mobil 1. Engine still has good pep.Mostly does short trips. It lives in a climate that's hot in summer and can get quite cold in winter so I'm assuming more condensation in the oil in winter. It uses some oil.Not sure if it's leaking it or burning it.I have pushed the oil change interval to 6 months the odd time and close to 4000 miles.Good to know that I can push it a little more without much worry. Thanks all for chiming in.
